Tree Water Status and Plant Parameters Monitoring

Tree orchard canopies are more complex than those of most agricultural crops. Therefore, it is much more complicated to describe any transpiration or photosynthesis involved. However, as detailed knowledge of water use and carbon assimilation is critical for optimizing irrigation, several research studies have been conducted on this issue (A. Diaz-Espejo et al, 2002).

Leaf water potential was used in many research projects to describe olive tree water status. In most cases, the pre-dawn leaf water potential was used as a comparable parameter between irrigation treatments.
A comparison between the water status of olive trees under dry farming and drip farming was studied by Fernandes, S.E. et al (1993): the value of leaf water potential was shown to be very sensitive to atmospheric demand. Lower values were found in September than in August.
