The majority of olive orchards around the Mediterranean are not irrigated. In those that are irrigated a variety of irrigation methods are applied:
flood, furrow, sprinklers, mini-sprinklers, hanging drippers, surface drip irrigation, and during the last few years also sub-surface drip irrigation. In surface drip irrigated orchards, we find different applications. In most cases, one dripline per row of trees will be placed on the ground. Usage of two driplines per row is also a common practice. In some orchards the dripline is hung on the trees in order to enable crisscross cultivation.
In orchards irrigated by mini-sprinklers, we discover similar applications to those used in drip irrigation - meaning that in some cases the pipes and mini-sprinklers hang on trees and in other cases the sub main pipes lie on or under the ground with one or two mini-sprinklers per tree.
Recently we have noted increased use of sub-surface drip irrigation systems.
